Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been shown in multiple clinical trials to benefit human health. This beneficial yeast has been shown to be effective at reducing candida, Helicobacter pylori and the overgrowth of other pathogenic microbes within our guts.
Saccharomyces boulardii is a must for anyone who has taken antibiotics. When we take antibiotics, our beneficial gut flora is destroyed alongside pathogenic bacteria. As antibiotics do not target yeast, this allows the overgrowth of an opportunistic yeast that lives within our gut known as candida. Candida overgrowth can lead to many health problems from bloating, undigested food, brain fog, depression and hormone problems. If you have to take antibiotics, Saccharomyces boulardii should be taken daily to prevent the overgrowth of candida.
Recent research has shown that Saccharomyces boulardii can help to strengthen and boost our immune systems. This special yeast also helps to regulate our Secretory Immunoglobulin levels. As we know from previous Wellness Wednesday posts, sIGA acts as our bodies first line of defense against foreign substances such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. (1)
Choosing the right Saccharomyces boulardii supplement
Saccharomyces boulardii supplements are available in capsules of either lyophilized (freeze dried) or heat-dried preparations. You can usually tell when a probiotic is heat dried because the label will tell you to refrigerate the bottle. Lyophilized probiotic preparations are stable at room temperature and do not require refrigeration. When choosing Saccharomyces boulardii look for a lyophilized form as studies have shown that lyophilized capsules have much greater potency than heat-dried products that require refrigeration (2).
