Life and happiness aren’t about looking perfect or using easy fad diets for a quick-fix perfect body. The only way to achieve lasting health and happiness is by working some essential practices into your daily life in a way that suits you. Here are five things our health experts at Nuriss believe are essential…
Move your body
You really should exercise every day – whether it’s a hard core session at the gym, a revitalising and balancing yoga class, or a nice walk outside. At the very least, you should get your body moving by walking half-an-hour each day, but if you want to be your healthiest, fittest self, you need to include some strength work and cardio into the mix. The best way to exercise is to cross-train. So, for example, you might do yoga or Pilates on Monday, walk on Tuesday, do some cardio on Wednesday like a gym class or a run, weights or strength work on Thursday and swim on Friday. Then do whatever you want on the weekend – maybe a game of tennis or a walk or cycle with friends.
Eat the five food groups
Eating a colourful range of whole foods from each of the five food groups is good for your overall health – that’s your energy levels, mood, skin, digestive system, brain – absolutely everything! Plenty of raw and cooked vegetables, fruits, fibre, protein and healthy fats make up a healthy, balanced diet. It is also important to make sure you enjoy and appreciate your food by giving yourself time to eat your meals nice and slowly.
Hydrate your body
Water is the fuel that keeps your body going. Besides drinking the recommended two litres for men and 1.6 litres for women each day, you can include green tea and lemon water into your daily routine. Green tea not only hydrates you, but also gives you valuable vitamins and antioxidants, and warm lemon water in the morning helps hydrate you after a long night’s sleep as well as kick-start your metabolism for the day.
Get a good night’s sleep
Speaking of a long night’s sleep – no matter how well you’re treating your body with exercise and good food, if you don’t allow yourself a good sleep, your body and brain won’t function as best as they can. Sleep helps with memory, productivity, reflex, mood, skin health and metabolism and we can’t stress enough just how important it is. And on top of that, it will keep you motivated and make all the other steps like eating properly and exercising so much easier!
Laugh, then laugh some more!
Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. It is a result of having fun or finding something amusing and, like exercise, it releases endorphins. Don’t take life too seriously and make time for fun and friends every day!
